How to Dispute an Error on Your Credit Report

Learn the step-by-step process to challenge mistakes on your credit report and get them corrected through the proper channels.

  1. Get copies of all three credit reports. Pull your reports from Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion through annualcreditreport.com. The same error might appear on multiple reports, or only on one. You need to dispute with each bureau that shows the mistake, not just one of them.
  2. Document the specific error with evidence. Screenshot or print the incorrect information. Gather documents that prove the error — bank statements, payment records, or account closure letters. Write down exactly what's wrong: wrong balance, wrong payment history, account that isn't yours, or debt you never owed.
  3. File disputes online or by certified mail. Use each credit bureau's online dispute portal for faster processing, or mail a dispute letter via certified mail for a paper trail. Include copies of your evidence and clearly state what information is inaccurate and why. Keep the original documents for yourself.
  4. Wait for the 30-day investigation period. Credit bureaus must investigate within 30 days of receiving your dispute. They'll contact the creditor who reported the information to verify it. If the creditor can't verify the debt or admits the error, the bureau must remove or correct the item.
  5. Review the results and follow up if needed. You'll get a response letter and updated credit report showing any changes. If the dispute was rejected, you can add a 100-word statement to your file explaining your side. If the error remains and you have strong evidence, consider disputing directly with the creditor or consulting a consumer attorney.
