How to Fill Out the FAFSA Correctly

Learn how to complete the FAFSA form accurately to maximize your financial aid eligibility for college.

  1. Start your application early with an FSA ID. Create your Federal Student Aid ID at StudentAid.gov starting October 1st for the following school year. Both you and one parent need separate FSA IDs if you're a dependent student. This digital signature takes 1-3 days to verify, so don't wait until the last minute.
  2. Gather your tax and financial documents. You'll need your completed tax return from two years prior — so for 2026-2027 aid, use your 2024 tax return. Also collect bank statements, investment account statements, and records of untaxed income like child support or veteran's benefits.   3. Report income and assets accurately. Enter your adjusted gross income from your tax return exactly as filed. For assets, report the current balance in checking, savings, and investment accounts as of the day you file. Don't include retirement accounts like 401(k)s or IRAs, and don't include your primary home's value.
  4. List your schools in strategic order. Add up to 10 colleges you're considering, but put your top choice first. Some schools see this order and may adjust aid offers accordingly. You can always add more schools later by removing and replacing entries after your initial submission processes.
  5. Review and submit before state deadlines. Double-check every number against your source documents — income errors can delay processing for weeks. Submit your FAFSA as early as possible after October 1st, since some aid is first-come, first-served. State deadlines range from February to June, but earlier is always better.
  6. Monitor your Student Aid Report for corrections. You'll receive your Student Aid Report within 3-5 days of filing electronically. Review it carefully for errors and make corrections immediately if needed. This report shows your Expected Family Contribution, which colleges use to determine your aid package.
